rewatching csm season 1 in 2025 was an interesting experience for a multitude of reasons, but mainly in realizing just how good of an adaptation it is.

Back in September of 2022, when I had started watching anime proper and was just getting acclimated to my tastes and preferences in the medium, there was one show on the seasonal horizon that immediately caught my eye. This lavishly animated, hauntingly beautiful looking series that was so unlike anything I had seen back then. The muted score, naturalistic color palette, the volume of the character designs, it all felt so novel to a younger me who barely had an inkling of the breadth of the medium. Fast forward to the show coming out, and it was everything I could have hoped for and more. I adored the direction, the emphasis on quieter moments, the frenetic and visceral fights, the horror of the world and the toll it took on its characters, all rendered with exquisite character animation, and a beautiful presentation to boot. I liked it even more so narratively, since I went on to read the entirety of the manga and rest of Fujimoto's works right after. But there was something odd g...

watching Nosferatu in theatres made me have thoughts about gender roles, societal expectations and also this movie is just really fucking good so I want to talk about it.

I watched Nosferatu in cinemas a few weeks back at this point. I was letting it simmer in my head for a bit before I talked about it, but I quickly realized that I was continuing to lose my touch on all those emotions the film had managed to evoke in me. I subsequently proceeded to make a long bluesky thread about it because that's how we roll these days. The micro-blogging to macro-blogging pipeline is so intensely real! I suppose I can also allow myself to be more indulgent in my writing, without the restraints of 300 words set upon all my thoughts. Usually, this scares me, but I am trying to get over that hurdle. So some backstory first. I have always heard a lot of praise for Robert Eggers as a director from my cinephile friends. To that end, back in 2023 I watched Egger's " The Witch " with my roommate. It was a very proper experience as we watched the film at midnight, with little to take us out of the oppressive atmosphere painstakingly molded by the film. I...

talking about all the manga I read in december '24 and why you should maybe check 'em out.

Last year, I decided on a whim that I would stop keeping up with so many ongoing manga and instead check out short, niche stories from less well-known authors. It was a pretty good idea all things considered. What I failed to consider is that I am chronically addicted to turning relaxing ideas into productivity grinds, and here we are now.  I read 20 manga altogether. From a variety of authors, styles, genre and demographic. Some were frankly, exceptional. Some quite good. Most were pretty mediocre. The rest... well, we will talk about. Also important to preface that while most of what I read was via me falling down different author and recommendation rabbit holes on anilist. A fair few were also thanks to the wonderful folks over at Lovely Strange Dark , a translation group who, as they put it aptly "...scanlate obscure works, mainly josei, shoujo, and seinen, which are lovely, strange, or dark. Or all three." Also sho...

Talking about all the Anime I watched this year [2022] - Part 3

Image
Hey so remember how I said I wanted to put out the final part in a few days of the last one... yeah, about that. Well that sure didn't go how I wanted that to go huh? What with exams, life and my absolute lack of creative energy. I guess I am finishing this now, 4 months into 2023. Well here we go- Tsukimonogatari - Monogatari continues to be the perfect amalgamation of beautiful direction work and tightly written dialogue in the shorter OVA that fills the gap between second season and end season. Ononoki is one of my personal favorite characters so seeing her being an absolute menace to society was a good fucking time. I wish the story had a bit more substance to it but overall I can't really complain about a faithful adaptation. Arakawa Under The Bridge, Space Petrol Luluco, Inferno Cop - Bunching up all of these together because they are all insane in just the right ways. Arakawa with it's absolutely bonkers cast of characters, Luluco with it's franchise spanning hom...
